The Ecstatica walkthrough requires brewing a squirrel transformation potion, earning knighthood at the lake, retrieving the monastery holy relic and castle spellbook, and confronting the demon in the dungeons to lift the demonic curse over Tirich.
Surviving Tirich and Town Basics
The protagonist arrives in the village of Tirich in 928 AD on horseback searching for water. Crossing the rickety bridge triggers a collapse that cuts off the exit, forcing an exploration of the settlement. Movement relies on classic directional tank movement, while number pad keys govern attacks: 5 ducks, 7 strikes high, and 9 strikes horizontally. Running speed adjusts across function keys F9 through F12, whereas F1 through F4 enable silent sneaking.
Inventory management requires planning because hands serve as the only carrying space. The protagonist holds a maximum of two items at any given moment, with one in the left hand and one in the right. Picking up a third item forces dropping an active possession onto the floor.
Damage appears visually when the character begins limping and clutches an arm. Tirich features safe resting locations, such as the silo inside the barn, where lying down on the straw regenerates health over time until normal posture returns.
A relentless werewolf stalks the alleys of Tirich. When captured, the werewolf knocks the protagonist unconscious and hangs them from rafters or beams. Alternating the 4 and 6 keys shakes the character free from ropes. While dedicated attacks can drive the creature away temporarily, hiding inside structures or barrels prevents frequent confrontations.
Gathering Ingredients and Brewing the Potion
Progress requires brewing an alchemical mixture inside the laboratory on the top floor of Ecstatica's house, situated above the tavern room occupied by a drinking bear. The bear swings wildly when approached from the front, but sneaking along the left perimeter allows passage straight to the stairs.
The magical boiler requires three distinct components found across town:
| Item | Location in Tirich | Role in Progression |
|---|---|---|
| Herb | Shelf inside the locked shop storeroom | Alchemical ingredient for transformation potion |
| Mandrake Root | Ground directly below the hung priest in the church | Alchemical ingredient for transformation potion |
| Red Flower | Grassy path heading toward the monastery gates | Final ingredient to trigger the boiler brew |
Entering the shop triggers an encounter where a wounded shopkeeper collapses and leaves a key. Unlocking the storeroom door allows access to the rear barrels. Jumping into the second vat conceals the protagonist until the werewolf leaves the premises, allowing safe retrieval of the herb from the shelf.
The church near the village center contains the mandrake root underneath the hanging priest, alongside a holy bible resting near the altar. Outside the village, the pathway leading toward the monastery yields the red flower.
Depositing all three items into the laboratory boiler brews the concoction automatically. Drinking the mixture turns the hero into a small squirrel creature, granting the low stature required to enter hidden architectural crevices.
Reaching the Old Knight and Gaining Knighthood
Directly after drinking the potion, the protagonist must run to the church catacombs. Earlier, giving the teddy bear from Ecstatica's bedroom to the crying girl in the barn opens the dungeon entrance beneath the church. The small animal form allows passage through the narrow opening inside the crypt wall that human characters cannot enter.
Passing through the small tunnel leads into a sewer chamber guarded by trolls. Reaching the end of this subterranean corridor reverts the protagonist back into human form. Climbing the stone stairs opens a trapdoor leading directly into the living quarters of the Old Knight.
The frightened knight panics upon your arrival and surrenders his colored sword to plead for mercy. Equipping this sword is necessary to fulfill ancient prophecies referenced in the monastery texts.
Armed with the sword, exit the knight's quarters and head through the outskirts toward the garden lake. Beware the garden perimeter, where a horned minotaur patrols open paths. Step onto the stone dais resting by the water's edge. The Lady of the Lake emerges to accept the blade and dubs the protagonist the official Knight of Tirich.
Infiltrating the Castle and Dungeon Depths
Knighthood grants safe passage into the castle. Unknighted intruders face the resident sorcerer, who transforms unauthorized visitors into frogs. As an official knight, the sorcerer welcomes you, revealing that his maid stole an ancient spellbook, freed an evil demon from the stone circle, and now lies trapped in a trance deep below.
Ascending the castle tower reveals an inscription detailing how combining a holy relic with a book of magic creates an enchanted weapon. To complete this pairing, the hero must explore two distinct complexes:
- The Monastery Relic: Retrieve the holy book from the village church and carry it to the locked monastery gates. The protagonist recites Latin scripture, convincing the monks of their faith. Inside the chapel, grab the holy relic bone from the altar. Escape the pursuing monks by dropping through the hole in the library floor, which leads down into the sewer network.
- The Castle Basement Magic Book: Descend through the castle tower into the underground halls. Duck past the stone guardian and dispatch the phantom warriors in the theater room. Approach the staircase flanked by the stone dragon and walk along the outer edges of the steps to avoid triggering floor spikes. Retrieve the suit of gold armor from the crypt coffins to prevent heavy damage, then enter the side chamber to collect the Book of Magic from the pedestal.
Forging the Fire Weapon and Confronting the Demon
Carrying both the holy relic bone and the stolen Book of Magic to the ancient stone circle outside town initiates an arcane transformation. The ceremony merges the items into a flaming projectile weapon capable of damaging demonic entities.
Descend back into the castle dungeons to visit the Skeleton King. Defeat the doppelganger clone that appears in the lower hall to awaken the king and receive his royal benediction. This action removes the demon head seal in the lower catacombs, opening the winding path down to the demon's lair.
At the base of the staircase, the demon appears at an elaborate banquet table, holding the sleeping maid suspended in air. The creature offers a pact: surrender the enchanted relic bone in exchange for eternal life.
Placing the relic upon the table triggers the bad ending, leaving the protagonist bound in servitude while Tirich remains damned.
Refusing the offer requires backing away from the table into the open floor. The demon assumes the form of a winged dragon to attack. Aim the enchanted fire weapon directly at the beast, firing repeated bursts to stun and inflict damage. Defeating the creature breaks the dark trance over the maid, frees Tirich from its supernatural nightmare, and concludes the journey.
